A boy grows up in the 1950s, starting out life in a tobacco barn with a loving family but with no prospects for a successful life. But nobody told him. Jimmy has true adventures of his own as a kid, then goes to work 105 hours a week at age twelve. In college he carries out grand raids, earning him an invitation by the judge to join the Army.

Life changes forever in Vietnam. Jim’s platoon goes up against North Vietnamese regiments. He is severely wounded, and this time he is told that he will never walk again. He didn’t listen.

He serves 25 successful years as an infantry officer. He gives rides to hitch-hikers in South Central L.A., until he is attacked by a crazed junkie with a gun. He builds a toy store in Hawaii, and takes revenge on a video game theft ring. Travel with him to Korea and live with business girls, the black market and slickie-boys.

You never have to grow up. If you want life to be an adventure, it will be. If you want to enjoy life, you will. If you want to be successful, you will succeed.

The story is sometimes brutal and tragic, sometimes just plain (literate) country, and sometimes satire of real people you already know. It’s adventure, and it’s fun.

A Persian Promise is the memoir of Dr. Hossein Sakhai, a highly successful neurosurgeon from Huntington, West Virginia.

At the age of 15, Hossein was greatly motivated by the untimely death of his older brother from typhoid fever. Vowing to improve life for his fellowman and his community, he set for himself the most lofty goal he could conceive. With determination, persistence, intelligence, and a supercharged worth ethic, he satisfied his Persian promise as he became not only an accomplished neurosurgeon but a very successful business entrepreneur.

Despite Dr. Sakhai’s professional success, he was continuously challenged by the culture clash between his Iranian Islamic heritage and his family life in America. After four unsuccessful marriages and many stressful family trials, Hossein, at the age of 85, views his life with clarity and wisdom and pens this memoir for the benefit of his children and their progeny.

With e-mails inundating us, I think this will be my last personal letter. John asked me some time ago to write about the highlights of our lives, and once again I’m too late. John is gone now and I apologize to him for not doing this sooner. But I do feel that he will somehow be aware of this and I hope that his family enjoys it. This letter will abound in digressions, but that’s the way our lives were.

My Story was written in an effort to capture my memories of the Vietnam War. I arrived in Vietnam on December 19, 1967, as a naive twenty-year-old private, E-3, and left on December 9, 1968, as a disillusioned Staff Sergeant, E-6, with two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. As a soldier assigned to Alpha Company, Third Battalion, Twenty-first Infantry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, I fought the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regulars (NVA) in the flatlands and the mountains west of Tam KY and the NVA on the DMZ north of Dong Ha. Enemy fire, malaria, accidents, and the scorching heat all took a heavy toll on Alpha Company. The high casualty rate was a constant drain on the company’s experience and the lack of experience produced yet more casualties. On more than one occasion, stupid mistakes cost young men their lives. But at other times, like when we turned back the NVA on the DMZ, I can assure you that there wasn’t a better outfit in Vietnam on that night in May.

Henry Schmidt has done it again.... He has written for the people who look to find their friends or themselves in each and every story he comes up with.... One reader said she was certain that it was her mate who he wrote about in one of his stories. Another fan said it was his fault that the story was so true to his misbehavior. Still another older gentleman said he apologized to his wife for being in the story she had read about misinterpretations of love.... Henry has written stories that have made men ask their wives to pull over while driving so that they can retell the story in THEIR words.

Where these stories come from is anyone’s guess, but you can be sure that there is at least one that is very similar to what you have experienced during your youthful dream filled days and nights. Every man and at least most women will admit that the stories ring true in certain ways that they are reluctant to remember. If that is the case with you... then read with a smile on your face and answer questions at a later date.... Enjoy what the author has provided for discussion with your loved ones sometime in the near future... Hurry because Henry has more stories coming soon and you my friend might just be the focus of his next book....

Henry Schmidt has many a story yet to put to print. He is writing for everyone to enjoy, even though some folks have asked that their names not be used.... He is getting more ideas from the people he crosses paths with in his everyday life in Las Vegas, Nevada. If you are looking to be part of some personal exposure... then play it straight so that excuses in the future are easier to explain....
