Writer Owen Aherne must face the fact that he is in the beginning stage of Alzheimer’s disease. He realizes the novel he has just begun about ancient Ireland will be his last chance to prove to his family, to his critics, and to himself that he can write a truly great story. Beleaguered by doubt, by misgivings about his life, and by the encroaching symptoms of his mental decline, Owen struggles to write a story about a young Iron Age Gael who wishes to become a bard but who must overcome his humble origins and survive the predations of ruthless marauders. It is a story about the life Owen wishes he could have lived. With his mind and memory failing, he desperately hopes that he will be able to finish his last novel and that it will be not only a great story but a vindication of the choices he has made during his lifetime.
