The story, which takes place in the nineteen-seventies, is about a young couple, Dan Merak, an electrical engineer in his mid-twenties, and his wife, Kim, an avid autograph collector. It is told in the first person by Dan, who Kim has persuaded to transfer from Boston to the southern branch of the company he works for, which is in Washington, D. C.

The story opens with them en route to Washington, D. C. Upon their arrival they discover that Kim is being stalked by a spirit which is determined to murder her. Dan enlists the aid of the famous parapsychologist, Dr. Edmond Franz, an Austrian. Dr. Franz acknowledges the plight of the tormented couple, and probes Kim’s subconscious to reveal a spirit who occasionally emerges; a colonial girl named Gabriela.

As the plot develops, the stalking of Kim intensifies. Dr. Franz, sympathetic of Dan’s desperation, becomes his mentor and introduces him to the Out Of Body Experience, the only way for Dan to fight for Kim’s life. Dan is then confronted with a deviation from his inherent beliefs. Dan must die in order for Kim to live. An account is given of Dan’s struggle within himself to overcome his mortal fears as he enters death’s corridor in his attempt to cross over to the other side.

Together, in a colonial setting established for the task, Dr. Franz and Dan experiment with methods previously utilized. Through various encounters Dan unravels spirits which influence the intriguing outcome.

Lauren has finally arrived at her destination called madness. She finds herself in a run-down, decrepit old Sanatorium. How she got there, Lauren does not know. In fact, she barely remembers her name! All of her memories are gone.

The therapy they are using on Lauren is called exposure therapy. Where they expose Lauren to her greatest fear, white noise! All in hopes Lauren’s fear will trigger her memories.

Lauren is forced to listen to 13 stories introduced to her through white noise. Each story, Lauren, becomes part of the story. Feeling the pain the stories reveal. Why is she so connected to the ones telling the stories?

All while having to deal with a sadistic nurse and a doctor who seems to not have her best interests in mind! While at times therapy feels like it is working, Lauren can’t help but wonder if something more sinister is going on?

However, with no one on the outside knowing who she is, it is up to Lauren, and the other patients, to try to stay sane in an insane world!

The Life of a Central Texas Ranching Legend

One of my first experiences as a Boy Scout was to attend summer camp at Camp Billy Gibbons, located in San Saba County, Texas. The name of the man for whom the camp was named meant nothing to me at that time, other than that it was a really cool place. Camp Billy Gibbons was located in a very remote but beautiful area, situated along the junction of Brady Creek and the San Saba River. Little did I realize that 11 years later I would marry one of the great-granddaughters of Billy Gibbons, an Irish immigrant during the last Potato Famine. It was then that I began to learn about the man himself – a self-made man who was not only a hugely successful pioneer livestock rancher, but a banker, owner of real estate across the state, and more importantly, a generous man who was a benefactor of schools, churches, the Boy Scouts, and people in need throughout the area he now called home. He was truly a legend in his own time.
