Life stories from the everyday grind of a “normal” person and family. Some are from the present and others are from years previous. Most people can relate to experiences, that parallel those included, in their own lives.

This book is a work of fiction based on experiences of my younger days as I remembered them. Friends surrounded me through my life. The friends of my youth were a joy worth more than all the gold in this world. A simple playground filled with laughter and joy. Relationships fueled by respect, love, and knowledge where loneliness has no part or place in life. Some of my childhood friends are no longer living, yet their spirits are as real as our memories. When we have a memory, no one is completely gone. My prayer is in some small way I leave a happy memory with those whom I have the pleasure of knowing and this book opens the vault of their memories as well as the memories of any person who reads it. Joy and laughter are keys to the universe. God is happy when his creation loves and has compassion for each other.

Fifty years of veterinary practice allows Dr. Mike Perona to share only the funniest interactions between his clients and their pets. His stories range from dogs and cats to parrots and ostriches while he examines the world of interspecies relationships. He shares this with his friends and fellow animal lovers.

Inside this book are 52 short stories I wrote for The Writer’s Cramp internet website daily contest. For this prompt contest, we had 24 hours to write a story of no more than 1,000 words or compose a poem that didn’t exceed 40 lines. Creativity counted more than correct spelling and grammar, although I am a firm believer in using a spellchecker.

My stories, many that won and some that lost, cover a wide range of genres. A few are autobiographical; some are science fiction or fantasy; others eventually became chapters in my published and unpublished novels. I hope you might even find one or two of them amusing enough to elicit a chuckle.

I am offering a challenge for anyone reading this collection. If one of the 52 prompts inspires you to write a story, give it a try.

Love, Heartache, and the Pursuit of Happiness is a compilation of three stories. Each one is unique.

The first story is about a young woman who is very independent. Her life has many twists and turns. It keeps you wondering what will happen next for Susan McClaren.

The second story is equally good and centers on Sara Jordan and her two brothers. Sara, Bryan and Matt look at life very differently. Their lives are filled with many trials and tribulations.

The third story is about two young girls, Jennifer and Elizabeth, who are close friends growing up together into adulthood. It shows how two friends can be close and yet so different, but always being there for each other.

Each story keeps you engrossed and eager to find out what will happen next with each one of these people.
