This is a must-read book. Learn about the history of a Latino tournament that reunited the community through the game of basketball every year. The richness of the Latino flavor doesn’t get any better.
In 1986, Victor Alvarado founded the Oregon Latino Basketball Tournament in Woodburn, Oregon. After the fifth year, the tournament paused for five years. Anthony Veliz revived this mega event and continued what Victor had started. The tournament continued for ten more years under Anthony’s leadership, then Rolando Ramirez stepped up as the director for the next thirteen years. The challenges and successes are incredible. This annual event must continue for the younger generations.
The tournament started with ten teams, then grew to thirty-six teams! Latinos and Latinas were motivated to play their best to showcase their talents. Many went on to play college basketball, and some even professionally. Inspiring Latino stories and more are inside. The resiliency is extraordinary.
The festivities, authentic Mexican food, and exciting games were so inspiring that this became like a family reunion every year in March. Relationships were built and memories were developed to where they had become life-long lasting.

Harness racing has been and still is a sport that draws
in famous people like celebrities and athletes. George
Forman, for instance, has owned more than twenty horses
since 1991.
Owners and trainers play an important role in the
harness business, but it is the drivers who are the real
stars. They possess not only courage, but have to make
quick and precise decisions that develop into wins and
losses. The trainers turn out the horses, but the
drivers are the ones who sit behind those horses and
transfer that training into big money.
This is the story of driver Ray Smith, well known and
respected on the race circuit. Ray’s career in harness
racing ended in a terrible accident that left him
paralyzed from the waist down. He endured a seven-year
recovery and eventually got feeling back and was able to
walk again. Follow Ray’s story that takes us behind the
scenes of the race industry and exposes the life of a
driver. It is as dangerous as it is exhilarating, and
yet young men and women have been drawn to it for
decades.

Pat Dean returns to his niche of sports writing with his
second publication, What If? How the Course of Sports
History Could Have Changed. Dean, fresh off the surprise
sensation of previous book Poemology, gives sports fans
a delicacy with how key events in sports history could
have been altered. In baseball, Jackie Robinson could
have played football and competed at the Olympics for
gold medals instead of breaking the color barrier. Or
in basketball Kobe Bryant could have ended up being a
Philadelphia 76er joining Allen Iverson after playing
basketball at Duke University. In football what would
have happened if Jim Brown did not retire early? Or how
close was Sidney Crosby of playing hockey for the Mighty
Ducks? Would Muhammad Ali go the distance with Joe Louis
in a 15 round fight? What If? explores these
possibilities and informs sports fans of things they
never knew before.

This is a true story about a boy whose life revolved
around God and basketball. Matt Espinoza aka “Noza”
was taught about the game of basketball at a very young
age. During that time he faced many obstacles, the most
difficult one being that he lost his mom to brain cancer
when he was nine years old. His dad raised him and his
brother and continued developing them for basketball.
Other challenges would confront Matt. He was dealing
with a blood platelet condition he had not grown out
of yet. Matt had a love for the game of basketball but
his body was not developing as fast as most kids. In his
younger years things were going great. But when he got
to Jr. High other kids seem to be passing him up and he
was struggling for playing time. Matt would always tag
along with his older brother, Jake, but always found
himself watching and not playing. When Matt was a
freshman and a sophomore he almost didn’t make McNary
High School’s basketball team. His dad speaks of the
challenges and lessons learned in this amazing story.
Matt was always trying to keep up with his older brother
Jake. They would eventually battle it out in a college
basketball game. This is an inspirational, encouraging,
and an amazing story of a young man that believed in
himself and was not going to be denied. Matt set goals
for himself and he worked hard to reach those goals.
His attitude of never giving up, and having faith paid
off big time.
